渡辺玲子は、超絶的なテクニック、玲瓏で知的な音楽性、切れ味鋭い官能性とその広いレパートリーで日本のみならず世界のヴァイオリン界をリードする逸材である。

第50回日本音楽コンクールにおいて最年少優勝、同時に第1回増沢賞（全部門を合わせて最も優れたものに与えられる賞）を受賞、翌年N響と共演し衝撃的なデビューを飾った。その後、ヴィオッティ、パガニーニ両国際コンクールで最高位を受賞。
ニューヨークのジュリアード音楽院に全額奨学生として留学し学士と修士を取得。その後、ニューヨークを本拠地として、世界各地でオーケストラとの共演、リサイタル、音楽祭への参加と国際舞台で目覚ましく活躍している。
これまでに国内の主要オーケストラはもとより、ワシントン・ナショナル響、ロサンゼルス・フィル、セントルイス響、ヴァンクーヴァー響、フィルハーモニア管、BBC響、ウィーン・トーンキュンストラー管、ロシア・ナショナル管、サンクトペテルブルク響、バンベルク響、Ｎ響などと共演、また、日本フィルのヨーロッパ・ツアー、東響のアメリカ・ツアーにもソリストとして同行している。
また、1999年にはニューヨークのリンカーン・センターにおいてニューヨーク・リサイタル・デビューを果たし、NYタイムズ紙はその演奏を「圧倒的なテクニック、華麗な音色、劇的な音楽表現」と評し、見出しに「ヴィルトゥオーゾの圧倒的迫力に脱帽」と掲げて絶賛した。このほか、ワシントンのケネディー・センターやラヴィニア音楽祭、イタリアのストレーサ音楽祭等にも出演。

CDデビューはシノーポリ指揮ドレスデン・シュターツカペレとの共演で、演奏会が録音されたCDがリリースされると同時に高く評価された。その他、これまでに”マイ・フェイヴァリッツ”、”バッハ無伴奏ソナタ＆パルティータ”、”チャイコフスキー＆ショスタコービッチ：ヴァイオリン協奏曲”、“カルメン・ファンタジー”、“ SOLO”などがある。

2004年からは演奏活動の傍ら教育にも携わり、秋田の国際教養大学特任教授として、音楽を専攻していない若者にも音楽の深さを知ってもらおうと、秋学期に集中講義（「音楽と演奏」）を行っている。
東京生まれ、現在ニューヨーク在住。2005年、第35回エクソン・モービル音楽賞奨励賞受賞。

使用楽器は、日本音楽財団より貸与された1736年製グァルネリ・デル・ジェス「ムンツ」。
