東京芸術大学で田村宏氏に、ザルツブルク・モーツァルテウムやベルリン芸術大学でハンス・ライグラフ氏に師事。17歳で日本音楽コンクール第2位。85年ブゾーニ国際コンクール第2位。87年エリーザベト王妃国際コンクール第2位受賞。その後、国内外の多数のオーケストラとの共演や全国各地でのリサイタルなど、多忙な演奏活動を展開している。
02年にはニューヨーク・カーネギーホールでリサイタル・デビューを果たしマイラヘス＝リサイタル・シリーズ（シカゴ）、ラ・フォル・ジュルネ（フランス・ナント）などにも出演。NHK交響楽団をはじめとする国内の主要オーケストラのほか、ベルリン交響楽団、サンクトペテルブルク交響楽団、ロシア・ナショナル交響楽団、ノールショピング交響楽団、スコットランド室内管弦楽団といった海外の名門オーケストラとも多数共演。室内楽の分野でもK・ブラッハー、S・イッサーリス、堤剛、K・ライスター、ライプツィヒ弦楽四重奏団、ウィーン八重奏団など内外の名手達と数多く共演。 近年は妻でもあるヴァイオリニスト鈴木理恵子との共演を重ねており、作品の本質に迫る深い音楽性が各地で極めて高い評価を受けている。13年に鈴木理恵子との共演による「ブラームス：ヴァイオリン・ソナタ全集」（キングインターナショナル）を発表。また、同年秋リリースの「ラフマニノフ：ピアノ・ソナタ第2番」、14年1月リリースの「ベートーヴェン：3大ピアノ・ソナタ」（両盤ともオクタヴィア）は、共にレコード芸術・特選盤となる。その後も、鈴木理恵子とのデュオによる「シューベルティアーナ」、「モーツァルト：ヴァイオリン・ソナタ集Vol.1」（共にレコード芸術準特選盤）、ピアノ独奏による「チャイコフスキー：くるみ割り人形（ピアノ独奏版・世界初録音・レコード芸術特選盤）」、「リスト：ピアノ作品集」（レコード芸術特選盤・いずれもオクタヴィア）と、続々とＣＤが発表されている。
14年1月にはサントリーホール（大ホール）でソロ・リサイタルを行い、大きな反響を得た。その模様はNHK「ベスト・オブ・クラシック」でも放送された。16年1月にも再びサントリーホール（大ホール）でソロ・リサイタルを開催。「類のない高次元の名演」「圧巻のリサイタル」と評され、大成功をおさめた。
92年出光音楽賞、98年モービル音楽賞奨励賞、04年ホテルオークラ賞受賞。現在、桐朋学園大学特任教授、国立音楽大学招聘教授。
