1971年、東京生まれ。視覚障がいを負った幼少期にヴァイオリンと出会い、音楽の勉強を始める。桐朋学園大学卒業後、英国王立音楽院へ留学。1997年、同院をスペシャル・アーティスト・ステイタスの称号を授与され首席卒業。1998年、東京サントリーホールにおいて小林研一郎指揮、日本フィルとの共演でデビュー。その後、英国と日本を拠点にソリストとして精力的な活動を展開し、毎年数多くのリサイタルを行っている。
国内外の主要オーケストラとも多数共演しており、ザルツブルグ・モーツァルテウム管弦楽団（ユベール・スダ―ン指揮）、スロヴェニア国立マリボール歌劇場管弦楽団、ボローニャ歌劇場室内合奏団などにソリストとして迎えられ、いずれも高い評価を得ている。2007年のスロヴェニア国立マリボール歌劇場管弦楽団との共演においては、ヴォルフ＝フェラーリ作曲「ヴァイオリン協奏曲ニ長調」を日本初演、同楽団のスロヴェニア公演でもソリストを務めた。2011年は、欧州最高のオーケストラのひとつであるキエフ国立フィルハーモニー交響楽団の日本ツアーのソリストとして成功を収め、着実な歩みを進めている。
CDは、1999年リリースのファーストアルバム「歌の翼に」（ビクターエンタテインメント）が20万枚の記録的大ヒットとなり各地で売り切れ公演が続出、大きな話題を集めて以来、2015年リリースの「無伴奏の世界｜川畠成道」まで13枚をリリースしている。なお、デビュー10周年記念CD「ザ・ベスト」と11枚目のCD「川畠成道クライスラーを弾く」、13枚目の「無伴奏の世界｜川畠成道」は、レコード芸術誌で特選盤に選ばれている。
「徹子の部屋」、「スタジオパークからこんにちは」などのテレビ番組にも出演。エフエム世田谷「川畠成道のレディオ・ストリングス」では５年間パーソナリティーを務めた。弦楽器専門誌 「サラサーテ」における連載は、７年目に入り好評を得ている。
デビュー当初より音楽活動の傍ら、積極的に国内外でチャリティコンサートを行う。
中学音楽鑑賞教材や高校英語教科書、高校現代文教科書に映像や文章が使用される等、社会派アーティストとしても多方面に影響を与えている。
