桐朋学園大学１年在学中に、第51回日本音楽コンクール第１位を受賞。数々の国内外での受賞を経て、1987年にヨーロッパと日本で本格的な演奏活動をスタートさせた。
これまでに日本の主要オーケストラと共演した他、海外のオーケストラとの共演も数多く、人気、実力ともに日本を代表するピアニストとして活動している。これまでにサラステ指揮フィンランド放響、マゼール指揮ピッツバーグ響、バイエルン放響及びフィルハーモニア管、小林研一郎指揮ハンガリー国立響、ズッカーマン指揮イギリス室内管(ECO)、ブルゴス指揮ベルリン放響、パーヴォ・ヤルヴィ指揮ドイツ・カンマーフィルなどのソリストとして迎えられ高い評価を得ている。
リサイタルも全国各地で開催しており、中でも「ベートーヴェン・ピアノ・ソナタ全曲演奏会」とレコーディングは、作品への真摯な取り組みと音楽性が高く評価され“ベートーヴェン弾き、仲道郁代”という評価を確固たるものとしている。近年は、ショパン、モーツァルト、ベートーヴェンなどの各シリーズ企画、毎年恒例となったサントリーホールでのコンサートなどが好評を得ている。
他にも、子どもたちに音楽との幸せな出会いをして欲しいとスタートした「不思議ボール」、各地の学校を訪問するアウトリーチ活動など、魅力的な内容とともに豊かな人間性がますます多くのファンを魅了している。
レコーディングはソニー・ミュージックジャパンインターナショナルと専属契約を結び、多数のCDをリリースしている。ベートーヴェン ピアノ・ソナタ第30.31.32番は、2007年度第45回レコード・アカデミー賞（器楽曲部門）を受賞。最新盤は「モーツァルト：ピアノ・ソナタ全集」で、「レコード芸術」誌で特選盤に選ばれ、濱田滋郎氏より「現代のピアノによるモーツァルトの決定盤」と評された。
著作には『ベートーヴェン　鍵盤の宇宙』（ナツメ社刊）『ピアニストはおもしろい』（春秋社）等がある。テレビ番組、新聞、雑誌、ラジオなどメディアへの出演も多く、音楽の素晴らしさを広く、深く伝える姿勢は多くの共感を集めている。
2003年からは、地域社会の活性化と音楽文化の発展を目指し、一般財団法人地域創造理事、大阪音楽大学特任教授、2012年からは桐朋学園大学教授としても積極的に活動している。
